Cleaning Checklists for Any Room, Season, or Purpose

Let’s face it – no matter how organised you are, cleaning is a chore that many of us dread. Unfortunately, it’s also a necessary task that must be done regularly, and getting professional help isn’t always an option. If you find yourself overwhelmed with your cleaning errands, you’ve come to the right place.

Dettol have created these handy cleaning checklists to help you clean for a range of rooms and purposes - whether it's a quick tidy, a seasonal refresh, or a special occasion spruce up. By using a cleaning house checklist, you can create a game plan to tackle your cleaning errands bit by bit, so you can enjoy a fresh, clean home in no time.

  1. Why use a cleaning checklist?
  2. Before you start
  3. General cleaning tips

  7. Build your own cleaning checklists

Why use a cleaning checklist?

Making sure a room is squeaky clean from top to bottom can be overwhelming, especially if you're cleaning multiple rooms. It's easy to miss things, even if you're just doing a quick clean. If you forget to do something one week, you may forget to do it the following week too, and this can form into a habit. Having a checklist for house cleaning helps you to organise your cleaning jobs to make sure that everything gets done - so you won't get any annoying surprises about something you've forgotten to do when you've finally sat down to put your feet up.

Before you start

Cleaning is a chore, but it doesn't have to always feel like one. Some people find cleaning therapeutic and relate cleaning their home to cleansing their mind, as a tidy space helps them to feel better mentally. For the rest of us, it can take a lot to muster up the motivation to clean! The good news is, there are ways to hype yourself up and get ready for a good clean.

  • Get comfy: Cleaning is not an occasion to get dressed up for. You're likely to get a little dirty as you scrub away. Put on some comfy clothes that you can easily move around in and don't mind getting dirty.
  • Turn it up: Music is a great addition to most events, and cleaning is no exception. Turn on some jams - the bouncier the better - to give you the energy you need to scrub away. Cleaning while belting out your favourite hits can help make the time fly by.
  • Share the fun: If you've got a big job ahead of you, why not ask for a helping hand from your friends? Having company can help it to feel like less of a chore as you can catch up while you clean. Throw in some refreshments and games during the breaks. Just don't forget to return the favour!

General cleaning tips

It may be tempting to jump straight into scrubbing stains and dirt as soon as you see them. But there are a few things to keep in mind that can help make your cleaning as efficient as possible.

  • Prepare your products - by planning out what you need to do with a house cleaning checklist, you can see which products you need to have on hand and prepare them beforehand.
  • Pick up and tidy loose items - to make sure you have access to the surfaces that need cleaning, clear any clutter such as clothes, remote controls, kids or pet toys, loose papers, decorative items, etc.
  • Start top to bottom - leave cleaning the floors until last to pick up all the loose dirt and dust at the end. For more tips, read our guide on how to clean a floor and for your floor tiles, check out how to clean grout.
  • Divide and conquer - dividing the room into sections can help you make sure you've covered everything.
  • Rinse and replace often - keep an eye on your cleaning materials to make sure they're still cleaning effectively. When the sponge or mop head starts leaving traces of dirt behind, it's time to give it a rinse or reach for a new one.

Cleaning checklists by room

Each room in your house will have different jobs that need doing with various cleaning products, particularly for the kitchen and bathroom. Use the following printable checklists to make sure you cover everything you need to do on a room-by-room basis.

Kitchen cleaning checklist

Since the kitchen is where you handle and cook food, it's essential to keep it clean and hygienic. You'll likely be tackling a variety of stains from cooked grease to food crumbs and dried spills. So, use products that are antibacterial and effective against tough food stains. Be sure to avoid product contact on food or food preparation surfaces, and read the product label to make sure it is suitable for the surfaces you're using them on.

Bathroom cleaning checklist

The bathroom can be a thriving environment for germs and unwanted odours. It's easy for soap scum, grime, and mould to build up around the bathing area, and for dirt to accumulate on surfaces and mirrors. Using products formulated for the bathroom can make your cleaning more efficient. Just remember to open the windows for good ventilation whilst you clean.

There are areas of the house that you use daily which can quickly get dirty or messy as the day goes on. These areas require a little attention every day to keep them fresh for the next day, or to make sure they don't become unmanageable towards the end of the week.

If you're looking to get organised and reduce the clutter in your house, this checklist is for you. Simply divide the items you'd like to organise into three piles - Keep, Sell/Donate and Trash. Anything you'd like to hold on to stays in the 'Keep' pile, things that are in good condition but no longer needed can go in the 'Sell/Donate' pile, and anything else you don't want should go in the trash.
